Appeal for peace ‘from a beautiful and wounded city’
November 24th, 2008

Nicosia, CYPRUS - Among the key points of the three days of seminars and roundtables organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio, the representatives of different religions consigned an appeal for peace to children of various nationalities, who in turn will symbolically hand over the message to ambassadors of the world. ‘We are in a difficult turning point in history. Many securities are shaken by the financial crisis gripping the world. Many are pessimistic on the future. The wealthier nations focus their attention on the protection of their citizens. But the poor will pay a high price for this crisis. We think with great concern of the millions of new and old poor, victims of a market deemed omnipotent. It is time’, says the appeal read in the square in front of the Bishops’ palace, in the centre of Nicosia, ‘to listen to the grief of many and work toward establishing a new world order of peace.
